A muddler is a long, thin tool used to crush ingredients such as fruit, herbs and spices into the bottom of a glass or cocktail shaker.
Although primarily used to create cocktails and other alcoholic beverages, a muddler can also be used in non-alcoholic beverages such as mocktails or infused water.
Optimum crushing is recommended for a satisfactory result. Crushing too little could leave the drink tasteless, while crushing too hard could lead to off-flavors.
Follow the steps below for best results:
1. Start by placing the ingredients in a cocktail shaker or glass and cup the top of the muddler in the palm of your hand, placing your fingers along the sides of the muddler for support.
2. Gently press the handle against the ingredient and twist once in both directions. Do this several times.
3. Repeat the mixing process for all the ingredients in the glass.
